01 Scope & Self-Hosting
These Terms apply to use of Sentinel, a self-hostable Discord server-management bot published by mob5824 (the “Maintainer”), and to any Sentinel instance actually operated by or for the Maintainer. Sentinel provides features such as timed role punishments, pardons, warnings, member applications, and an authenticated dashboard. Features can change between versions.
Sentinel is software you run on a machine you or your community choose. If you install and operate your own copy—or use a copy run by another community—the person or organization running that instance controls its configuration, access, availability, and data. The Maintainer is not the operator of an independent instance and cannot administer or remove its records.
If you do not agree to these Terms for an instance operated by the Maintainer, stop using that instance and ask its operator to remove it. These Terms do not replace the license applicable to a copy of Sentinel’s source code.
02 The Software
Sentinel is a Discord bot with staff tools grouped under /manage. Depending on version and server configuration, it can apply timed role changes, record warnings and moderation history, and collect and route applications for staff review. A dashboard offers authenticated controls for supported server, moderation, application, configuration, and history features.
Sentinel automates actions configured or requested by server staff; it does not decide whether a member has broken a rule, assess the fairness of a decision, or guarantee that Discord will carry out an action. The server and its staff remain responsible for their community policies and moderation outcomes.
03 Eligibility & Discord Rules
You must meet Discord’s minimum age requirement and any higher minimum age that applies where you live. Your use must comply with applicable law and Discord’s current , , and applicable developer policies.
Discord is a separate service. Discord may change its platform, permissions, API, or policies, or limit an account, application, or server. The Maintainer does not control those decisions.
04 Server Operator Responsibilities
Server owners and administrators are responsible for choosing whether Sentinel is appropriate for their community and for configuring it safely. They agree to:
- Grant only the Discord permissions needed for enabled features, and keep Sentinel’s role and configured roles in an appropriate order.
- Choose trustworthy staff and review moderation actions, application access, role assignments, and server settings.
- Tell members what information an application requests and who can review it; avoid collecting passwords, payment details, or unnecessary sensitive information.
- Secure the host, bot token, dashboard key, configuration, database, logs, and backups; limit access to the dashboard and stored records.
- Set and carry out suitable retention and deletion practices for their instance and for messages sent to Discord.
Removing Sentinel from a Discord server does not necessarily stop a separately running process or erase files from its host. The instance operator must stop the program and handle local data.
05 Applications & User Content
Application answers, form text, moderation reasons, decision notes, and other text submitted through Sentinel are provided by members or server staff. Submit only information you have permission to share. Server operators and the staff they authorize may be able to read application answers and moderation records in Discord or through the dashboard.
Server operators—not the Maintainer—decide what questions to ask, who can review submissions, and how long they keep records. Do not use the bot to expose private information, harass someone, or make a submission under another person’s identity.
06 Permissions & Security
Sentinel can only act within the permissions Discord and a server grant it. Its dashboard is configured to listen on the local machine by default and requires a dashboard credential. If an operator makes the dashboard remotely reachable, the operator is responsible for using HTTPS, a suitable firewall or trusted proxy, a strong private credential, and appropriate access restrictions.
No software or configuration can guarantee absolute security. Do not publish bot tokens, dashboard keys, or other credentials in a repository, screenshot, issue, or chat. If a credential is exposed, the operator should revoke or replace it promptly.
07 Acceptable Use
You may not use Sentinel or an instance operated by the Maintainer to violate law or Discord policy, infringe another person’s rights, threaten or harass people, submit information without authorization, disrupt or probe systems, bypass access controls, or interfere with the bot, dashboard, Discord, or another user’s account.
Do not use moderation or application features for retaliation, discrimination, or other unlawful conduct. Server operators are responsible for the actions taken by their staff and for the content and configuration of their own instance.
08 Third Parties & Source Code
Sentinel relies on Discord and may rely on the host, network, or other services selected by an instance operator. Those services have their own terms and privacy practices. The Maintainer does not control or guarantee them.
Source-code permissions are governed by the license stated or supplied with the particular Sentinel version you use. The repository README currently identifies the project as MIT-licensed; check the for the terms that accompany your copy. These Terms do not grant rights to Discord or other third-party services.
09 Availability & Changes
Sentinel is provided on an “as available” basis. Features may change, be interrupted, or stop working because of software updates, configuration, host conditions, or changes to Discord and other dependencies. The Maintainer does not promise a particular uptime, support response, or continued availability of any feature.
These Terms may be revised by posting an updated copy with a new “Last updated” date. Continued use of an instance operated by the Maintainer after a revision takes effect means you accept the revised Terms. If you do not, stop using that instance.
10 Disclaimer of Warranties
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, SENTINEL AND RELATED MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE,” WITHOUT WARRANTIES OR CONDITIONS OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, TITLE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. THE MAINTAINER DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE SOFTWARE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR SECURE. NOTHING HERE EXCLUDES A WARRANTY THAT CANNOT LAWFULLY BE EXCLUDED.
11 Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, THE MAINTAINER WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, EXEMPLARY, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR FOR LOST DATA, LOST PROFITS, SERVICE INTERRUPTION, MODERATION DECISIONS, ROLE CHANGES, OR THIRD-PARTY CONDUCT ARISING FROM USE OF SENTINEL. NOTHING IN THESE TERMS LIMITS LIABILITY THAT CANNOT LAWFULLY BE LIMITED.
12 Ending Use
A server administrator can remove Sentinel from a Discord server, and an instance operator can stop their own copy at any time. The Maintainer may suspend an instance it operates for abuse, security, legal, or operational reasons. Ending use does not automatically delete information held by Discord, an instance operator, or a hosting provider. See the for data requests.
